Choosing Camping Lights
To Camp With.

Camping lights should be an extension of who you are making hiking and backpacking safer and easier.

Camping lights come in different shapes, sizes, and levels of brightness. They vary from LED flashlights, to lanterns, to headlamps. Like any piece of camping equipment each offers it's own advantages and disadvantages...

LED flashlights are a pretty recent player to the game of light. They are much more efficient than the old standby incandescent bulbs, but depending on how many LED's the flashlight you're looking at uses and the quality of the LED's, the battery life could be less than what you'd expect.

Lanterns are a tried-and-true camp light. They're great for eating, playing cards, or reading at night because you can set them just about anywhere and they'll throw off a good amount of localized light. Lanterns vary between electric lanterns, propane lanterns, butane lanterns, and liquid fuel lanterns (usually white gas). The electric fluorescent tube type lantern is nice because it provides light as soon as you turn the switch although it might not be as bright as the fuel-type lanterns.

Headlamps are nice for campers, backpackers and hikers who use their hands alot or don't like the idea of having to constantly hold a light. The LED type headlamps usually put out a good amount of light and have good battery life. Backpacking lights should be light, have long life, and put out a good amount of light.

So it comes down to what you want and need for your specific activities. And if you're like most people you'll probably want and have a need for more than one camping light (I took three on my last trip). It all depends on how many activities you do, how far you are from help, and if you're a person that likes a back-up light or not (I recommend one).

Camping lights have come a long way, check them out, the future is bright.
;-)
