Backpacking Facts About
Candle Lanterns.

Backpacking and camping candle lanterns are probably the lightest camping lanterns available, and because of their low light intensity, they have less of a chance of disturbing local wildlife.

They are quiet, simple, easy to ignite, don't require fuel canisters, are light-weight, and compact. There are also no bulbs, batteries, canisters or mantles to replace. Candle lanterns take up very little room when backpacking compared to fuel canisters because each candle can burn up to 9 hours... unless of course you burn it from both ends. ;-)

The drawback is that the light isn't very bright when compared to other lanterns but if you like soft light to read by or don't like seeing bright spots in front of your eyes every time you glance at a bright lantern then this type of lantern could serve you well. If you're a backpacker the light-weight and small amount of room required in your backpack may just win you over to add it to your camping equipment.

UCO makes the most popular candle-type lanterns. Their single version weighs in at 3.7 ounces and puts out 1 to 1.5 watts of light. If that's not enough light they also offer a three candle version called the UCO Candlelier Red that has a top that can serve to heat small containers of water. They're available at BackCountry.

As with any flame-type lantern it's a good idea to avoid using candle lanterns inside your tent, near flammable clothing, etc. because of the fire hazard. If you're looking for an inside lantern battery lanterns are the way to go. They provide instantaneous light, and when you add in efficient LED technology, it makes for a compact size.
