Coleman camping equipment began about 100 years ago. W.C. Coleman (William Coffin Coleman) started it all with his first product, the Coleman lantern.

At the time electricity was either unavailable or unreliable and the old-fashioned kerosene lamps that burned at the wick gave off a poor quality light. Coleman stumbled upon a newer pressurized-gas and mantle design and was impressed by the quality of light it produced. After becoming a salesman for the company he became familiar with the lamp and its problem areas and decided he could make it better. He bought the patents and set about to improve upon the design.

Eventually he started to build a good name for himself, but in 1914 he introduced the lantern that would make him well known. His new lantern creation put out 300 candlepower of light, enough light that farmers could actually use it to work late into the evening. This added to their productivity in a big way. And the rest they say, is history...

Coleman is still headquartered out of Wichita, Kansas, but things have grown a little...

Although Coleman originally began with a lantern and one man with a lot of ambition, they have grown to a company with about 1,500 employees. As you've probably noticed they've added more than a few pieces of camping gear and hiking equipment to their product line over the years. ;-)
