Family Camping Tents Review.

Like most camping equipment, there are more average and low quality family camping tents than there are high quality shelters. I sort through the possibilities and recommend the best of what I have found, if it makes the grade. Sometimes though no candidate seems worthwhile, it happens, and I have no problem not making a recommendation. After more than a few hours of research, what I've found may surprise you...

At least with tents, I've found that a certain brand name doesn't mean a whole lot because although they may have a model or several that are high quality, they also more often than not have questionable models that I wouldn't invest in. There are also certain companies you may wish to avoid altogether.

With that in mind, the family camping tents I recommend... or maybe I should say the family camping tent I recommend below is the best family tent I've found at this time. As with anything this recommendation may change if several family camping tents improve or if this one happens to go downhill. But, as of today for a shelter this size, this gets my vote as the best family camping tent.

As with anything, if you're new to camping I recommend borrowing a friends camping gear or hiking equipment before you invest in your own gear just to be sure you actually like it. Once you know you like it investing in the best equipment only makes sense, because there's not much that's more tedious than something that doesn't work the way it's supposed to. Besides the things you have that you enjoy using you want to keep around for a while. I'll have to admit when I came across Kelty I was a bit skeptical, I learned though that some of their products offer a lot of value for the money.

Family camping tents The Kelty Mantra 7 Tent is a medium large size as far as family camping tents go. It does quite well in wind and rain. The 7-Person 3-Season Kelty Mantra 7 Tent is 6 feet high and offers lots of floor space, which is nice for family trips or if you like to camp with several friends (they also offer smaller versions of the same tent). The aluminum poles, which are made by DAC (Dongah Aluminum Corporation), mean it will take a beating better than fiberglass. And being aluminum they'll also be less likely to shatter if you decide to camp in colder weather.

The full-rainfly, sealed seams, and bathtub floor go a long way toward keeping the inside of your tent and your gear dry. I did hear about a family that had a corner leak during an 18 hour thunderstorm, but the fact that there were two inches of standing water outside their tent says a lot. That's impressive, and better than some boats. ;-)

The Mantra weighs in at 23 lbs 8 oz making it great for car camping, and a lot lighter than the old canvas tents that use to weigh at least twice that. Even though family camping tents aren't designed to be strapped underneath a backpack, light gear still makes set-up, stowing and carrying easier. Not to mention it takes up less space, which means more room for smores, right? ;-)
