The Best Men's Hiking Boots?
Are you looking for the best in men's hiking boots? The best footwear I've found may surprise you...
After doing hours of research on hiking boots, I found that there are many more poor and average quality boots, than there are great ones. I also discovered that previously great boots might disappoint people if a company is sold, or if management for some reason decides to change a proven winning formula. Not surprisingly this results in many loyal customers feeling letdown by a brand that they've known and trusted for years. While complaining may or may not force them to improve their product eventually, waiting for them to do so doesn't make much sense. Instead, appreciate the opportunity they have given you to find something you'll like even better. Here's my suggestion... The Montrail Torre GTX is a great boot that's been around for about 3 years. I recently spoke with someone at the company and it seems like they know they've got a good thing going as they're not planning to make any changes to the design in the near future. To me, that says a lot. Especially coming from an industry that sometimes changes their designs once a year. I have a feeling they 'get it', and know they've got a good thing. And just so you know, I don't work for them. If a friend asked me for a suggestion, these are the boots, and the store (Zappos customer service is excellent) I'd recommend.
The Torre GTX starts off with a Vibram® sole. Vibram® is great stuff, because it provides more traction than regular rubber and at least to me, seems to wear better too. Vibram® has a grippy feel to it when you walk on rock that helps to inspire more confidence.

When a boot has both Vibram® and Gore-tex®, it has more potential to become a great boot. Unless you only hike in the desert or in perfect weather, I also recommend getting a boot with Gore-tex®. You never know when you'll come across a rock-strewn shallow stream or puddle that you'll have to cross. I don't know about you, but I really dislike the feeling of water seeping into my boots, and then having soggy feet for the rest of the day. Wet feet are more vulnerable to chaffing, blisters and skin breakdown too. So, if you're not sure, I recommend spending the extra $20 and getting Gore-tex®. Besides those two important features... Great men's hiking boots should also be comfortable, durable, and good enough you'd buy them again. One thing that stands out is the fact that people mentioned they were so happy with these boots that they bought a second pair to replace their old worn Torres, or bought another spare pair to keep on-hand as back-up. If you've visited this site before you know I'm a bit picky when it comes to recommending camping gear. The The Torre men's hiking boot is the best men's boot I've found so far, even if you include Merrell and Vasque. In short, they're definitely worth a look. Boots are one of the most important pieces of hiking equipment you'll invest in. If you go cheap, most likely you'll soon realize your mistake and probably regret it soon after your purchase. Not to mention, cheap men's hiking boots will constantly remind you that you should have got something else. As my grandfather used to tell me, "Take care of your feet, you only get one pair." ...unless of course you're a centipede. ;-) Pros: A great men's hiking boot with Gore-tex® and Vibram® construction. It's comfortable, durable and offers good arch support. Great for multi-day hikes or moderate-weight backpacking. Cons: The leather might scuff a little easier than it should.
